Slept in till 8am again and then went to the gym for, you guessed it, my workout. Did 15 mins running on the tready and then did lower body weights. Found it tough going today and didn't increase any of my weights. My legs actually felt tired today, even running was hard. I might be due for an osteo session to limber up a bit. I didn't really stretch last week which is naughty, but have done a bit of stretching this week.
Looked at the noticeboard again, and I think there may be 8 or 9 girls in the comp actually. Its a bit hard to tell in the photos. There are 20 contestants all up including the guys. I wonder how the rest of them are tracking...
After the gym, I went to Baby Bunting with my extremely hungover brother-in-law (BIL). He went out last night to wet the babies heads and his mates made sure that he was very well watered! We were gonna go to the hospital after the shops, but I ended up dropping him home for another sleep. But this was awesome for me because I got to be my sister's support person and stayed with her all day in hospital!
I got to help her heaps with feeding and changing nappies...well actually, I left the latter to her when I realised that I wasn't quite up to cleaning up the green curry substance I found in their Huggies. I feigned ignorance, and went back to bottle duty.
After a lovely day with my girls, I went out to dinner with my BIL and we had the most delicious Thai food. I ordered a beef and vegie stirfry with oyster sauce (pad puk) which was really nice and my BIL had pork spring rolls and beef with cashew nut stirfry and rice. A perfect hangover cure!
Menu
Meal 1 - glass of lemon water
muesli with milk
Meal 2 - glass of water
long mac
pear and handful of nuts
Meal 3 - glass of water
protein shake with strawberry and banana
Meal 4 - glass of water
wholemeal sandwich with low-fat cream cheese, smoked salmon, capers, red onion, tomato and tabouli
Meal 5 - mineral water
vegetable and beef stirfry with oyster sauce
Meal 6 - nothing again!
I should be able to start my six meals again tomorrow. My sister comes home from the hospital and I am going to a wedding in the Yarra Valley. It will be my free meal time of the week again! Woo hoo! Looking forward to some cake and wine! Its gonna piss it down tomorrow though, hope we are undercover!
I probably wont blog again till Sunday morning. Until then folks...
Join me on my eight week journey to a slimmer me...promise I wont oil myself up for the after photo...or become a full-time body builder. Those chicks are scary!!!

Day 11 - In a wonderful surreal world
I had a bit of a sleep-in this morning and didn't get up till 8am. I then went to the gym and did 20 mins running on the treadmill (and got up to level 14!), 5 mins on the rower and 5 mins on the cross-trainer. Normally I would run for 30 mins on my cardio day but that has started to get boring, so thought I would try and mix it up a bit.
As I was leaving the gym, I saw Sally doing lat pulldowns with a ridiculously heavy amount of weight. Probably triple what I do. I totally freaked but it has made me feel more competitive. I am gonna put up my weights and really challenge myself. What's the point of completing a set of 15 reps with a little grunt at the end, when you can almost blow an aneurysm doing 10 reps and tear your muscles sufficiently enough to burn fat for the next 24 hours, I ask you? That's right, no point.
Can't remember if I have mentioned it but the next measurement has been postponed to the 11th Nov, as a few more people joined the comp on the weekend and Larry wanted to give them a chance to lose a bit of weight before the measure-up. My aim for that measurement is to be in the top 3 (out of 6 women). If I am coming last I will be totally pissed off. I always came last in everything sporty at school, so I need to prove to myself that I can acheive something fitness-related as an adult.
After the gym, I hung out at home for a bit, then tried out a new cafe in Northcote, called Gypsy Hideout. It has only been there 7 weeks and was converted to a cafe from an old hairdressing salon. It's pretty cool and has good coffee. I think it will be a new regular haunt for me and my sis and the twins.
Speaking of twins, I am totally in love. After the cafe stop, I spent the rest of the day at the hospital. I got to change a nappy and feed one of the girls. They are so tiny, only 2.5 and 2.7 kilos. They are like little monkeys, so fragile and precious...with alot of hair! Well just on their heads of course, they aren't actually a mutant strain of monkey...
I'm going back again tomorrow. Visiting hours are very strict but I managed to hide behind a potplant the last two nights and got to stay an extra hour!
Foodalicious:
Meal 1 - glass of lemon water
muesli with milk
Meal 2 - glass of water
apple and nuts
Meal 3 - glass of water
banana and strawberry protein shake with frozen yoghurt
Meal 4 - glass of water
dark rye sandwich with avocado, chicken, tomato, red onion, asparagus and spinach
Meal 5 - glass of water
50g smoked salmon and steamed broccolini
Meal 6 - nothing!
Again, I am too late for the sixth meal. Staying at the hospital has thrown out my eating schedule a bit but I don't care, I'm in love :)
Adieu to you and you and you...

Day 10 - Hurray they're here!
Didn't get a chance to blog yesterday because it was such a hectic day cos...THE TWINS FINALLY ARRIVED! They are totally, amazingly, sweet and adorably beautiful. They already seem to have their own personality and they are not identical which really helps to tell them apart. Thank God!
Anyway, I should start at the beginning. Woke up at 6am with a text from my brother-in-law to say that it was getting closer and the girls we almost here. At 6.30am, my sister started pushing and by 8am, my first niece popped out, closely followed at 8.08am by my second niece. I got the call from my brother-in-law around 10am with the good news. My poor sis was throwing up constantly before and after her labour :(
During this mammoth effort from my sis, I was at the gym pumping iron. I was glad for the distraction although my family and friends kept calling me asking, "Have you heard anything yet?" After 15 hours of labour, everyone was getting a little anxious and excited.
I did my upper body and found it fairly easy, so I will increase the weight next time. Then I did 20 mins on the cross-trainer and tried to go as hard as I could. Thinking of my sister in pain, I didn't want to wimp out myself.
After the gym, (and house sitting my sisters house all morning as they were getting renos done), I went out for lunch with my parents to celebrate the good news. We were dying to see my sister and babies but she was trying to sleep in the arvo, so we went into the hospital at night.
What I ate:
Meal 1 - glass of lemon water
muesli with milk
Meal 2 - glass of water
long mac
apple and nuts
Meal 3 - glass of water
long mac
combination of 3 salads (butterbean, roasted cauliflower and zucchini with couscous)
Meal 4 - glass of water
protein shake
Meal 5 - glass of water
grilled chicken salad with lettuce, avocado, tomato and toasted pinenuts
Meal 6 - none!
I didn't eat dinner till after 9pm, so didn't end up having the sixth meal. I was so knackered when I got home and felt quite full, so didn't want to shove anything extra in my gob...
What a great day! And what beautiful little baby girls :) Watch this space for a photo...

Day 9 - What a day!
I got up this morning with no motivation to go to the gym. I knew it was a cardio day and all I wanted to do was eat, not exercise! I dragged my old bones to the gym around 8.20am. I walked in and was greeted warmly by Larry. The music was pumping in the gym and I instantly felt energised for my workout! I ran 30 mins on the treadmill and although I didn't run as far as last time (only ran about 4.6km as I didn't increase my speed much at the beginning) by the end I got to level 13 in my speed. I think the machine only goes up to 16. Wanna get to that speed soon!
Left the gym feeling good and sweaty, then went home and got ready to go hang with my sister. She was still having contractions but they were around 20 mins apart. The poor thing was so exhausted and we just sat next to each other quietly on the couch. Some workmen were there installing some new windows and a back door. My sis patiently grimaced through each contraction as the drills whirred and hammers clang. She's such a trooper.
The workmen left around 5ish and then at 6.10pm it happened. Her waters broke! At last! After a couple of stunned moments, I ran to get some towels to shove under her. Luckily I caught the flow in time and there was no big mess like in the movies! I rang her partner and my sis called the hospital and then said to come in. She jumped in the shower, my brother-in-law came home and off they trotted to the hospital.
So its now 8.20pm. I hope it is all going smoothly and that we get a call soon! She has put up with so much pain and exhaustion in the last few weeks, so I hope the labour is swift for her! Love you my big sis ox
On a much more boring note, I still managed to eat boring food today:
Meal 1 - glass of lemon water
muesli with skinny milk
Meal 2 - glass of water
an apple and a handful of nuts
Meal 3 - glass of water
tuna salad with can of tuna in springwater, low fat mayo, diced tomato, cucumber and small can of mixed beans
Meal 4 - glass of water
protein shake
Meal 5 - glass of water
small grilled eye fillet steak (120g) with steamed broccolini
Meal 6 - glass of water
yoghurt
Tomorrow I'm gonna try to make it to a 6.15am boxing class...I think I have had a lobotomy...I am no longer sane...is it possible to be too healthy???

Day 8 - Start of Week 2
Another belly shot for ya! My sis in fetal monitoring today...

Week 2 stats:
Weight - 69kg!! (woo hoo, lost 1.4kg in a week!)
BMI - 23.6
Abs - still flabby
Just another Manic Monday? Well not really, I've had a pretty cruisy day actually. Hit the gym around 7.40am and did a 15 min cardio session on the bike. Then did some squats, lunges, leg curls and leg presses. For the leg press, I was lifting 90 kgs and almost grunting like a man.
Well I was doing alot of deep breathing actually and sounding a bit like my sister during her 'annoyingly frequent but no onset of labour' contractions...the blood was pumping round my body so hard I could even feel the pulse in my groin! It made me glad (or maybe dissapointed) that there were no vampires in the gym...aah True Blood I miss you.
Also, I spoke to Larry at the gym and found out there are six girls in the comp, so I am up against 5 other chicks. The second measurement has been postponed to mid November which gives me more time to really trim down. Watch out ladies!
Then it was off to the hospital again with my sis and back to her place to keep her company. The poor thing is spending most of her time trying to sleep but gets woken every 10-20 mins in cramping pain. Not fun. But at least she knows she will definitely have her little bundles of joy in her arms by the end of the week :)
And now to food, my fav topic! I did have quite alot of carbs today. Oops! I hadn't been grocery shopping so I had to buy lunch...that's my excuse! Oh well. Just ate a delicious steak and vegies now, so I feel better!
Menu:
Meal 1 - glass of lemon water
muesli with skinny milk
Meal 2 - glass of water
small pear and handful of nuts
Meal 3 - glass of water
1/2 wholemeal roll with avocado, chicken, tomato, asparagus and baby spinach leaves
Meal 4 - glass of water
1/2 wholemeal roll with avocado, chicken, tomato, asparagus and baby spinach leaves
Meal 5 - glass of water
small eye fillet steak (130g) with steamed carrot and broccolini
Meal 6 - glass of water
yoghurt
Until tomorrow, my sweets.

Day 7 - Rest day?
Today was my only day of no exercise this week but I didn't sleep in. I had a restless night's sleep after finding out last night that my sister was in labour. I tossed and turned and finally got up around 6.30am to text my brother in law for an update. Not much had happened during the night and they were still waiting for the doctor to arrive...
Around 10am the hospital sent my sis home as her contractions were getting milder and her waters still hadn't broke. Knowing that she was back home, I spent the day at the movies hanging out with some girlfriends. I popped in to my sister's late in the afternoon to find her lying on the couch in pain, still having pretty strong contractions and totally over it! I hope her waters break soon, Thursday is too far away!
My eating today was a little sporadic and didn't quite meet my 2-3 hour rule and I ate naughty white bread! Oh well, can't be perfect all the time can we?
Food:
Meal 1 - glass of water with lemon
muesli with skinny milk
Meal 2 - glass of water
3 strawberries and handful of nuts (you know what they say, more than a handful is a waste, right?)
Meal 3 - glass of water
lamb piadina with lettuce, tomato, cheese and garlic aioli
Meal 4 - glass of water
long mac with milk
protein shake
Meal 5 - glass of water
thai larb salad (chicken mince with herbs and vinegary sauce)
Meal 6 - glass of water
yoghurt
Tomorrow is the start of a new week and back into exercise. I'm looking forward to working out my lower body! It'll be another early start as my sis and I are going back to hospital in the morning.

Day 6 - Feeling lethargic
Day 6 saw me feeling quite lethargic. I got to the gym after 8 and did some cardio. Instead of running, I walked fast on the treadmill set to the hill program with steep inclines. I found that this was actually a good workout and I was very sweaty by the end! The more I sweat, the harder I feel I have worked, so of course Summer is a great time to exercise cos after 5 mins, I feel really fit ;)
Larry had put up these pictures of all the contestants in the Six Pack Challenge. I am second from the top. This photo is not the greatest but by the looks of things, it is mostly guys in the comp. I felt a bit weird taking photos of the noticeboard, like some weird flabby belly pervert...
The rest of the day was quite a cruisy one. I cleaned my house and watched alot of DVDs. Then at 6.30pm, I went to a friend's house for dinner. This was my free meal of the week! I was so excited to eat some different, flavoursome food for a change. The food was delicious and the wine I bought was excellent as well. Totally awesome meal!
Food:
Meal 1 - glass of lemon water
muesli with skinny milk
Meal 2 - glass of water
apple with handful of nuts
Meal 3 - glass of water
2 slices of multigrain toast (no butter or marg), one topped with a poached egg and the other with some cottage cheese, and rocket on top

Meal 4 - glass of water
protein shake with blueberries
Meal 5 - DINNER!! WOO HOO!!
several glasses of water
2-3 glasses of red wine
spoonful of: mushroom risotto, stirfried bok choy and prawns, leafy green salad with chilli vineagarette and a salmon pattie topped with lime mayonnaise - yum!
Meal 6 - glass of water
strawberries topped with liqueur cream - yum!
So after dinner I called my sister and found out she was IN LABOUR! Finally! I was so excited I hardly slept a wink all night. As I write she is still in labour (around 12 hours later), so hopefully we will hear soon! The suspense is killing me! Can't wait to meet my precious little darling nieces!

Day 5 - False Alarm (me not my sister)
So I get to the gym this morning for my second measurement and Larry takes me into the little room and starts rifling through his paperwork. I notice the file says 'Summer Weight Loss Competition'. He looks for my name and then realises he has got confused and that I'm not in the weight loss comp (which is for overweight and obese people), I'm in the six pack comp! He apologizes and lets me know that my second measure up will be Cup Weekend...
I'm a little confused myself. Do I look like I need to shed more than a few kilos? Do I look really fat? I stare in the mirror while warming up on the exercise bike and decide no...me at the beginning of 2010, yes but me now, no.
Ego back intact, I set to work on my upper body weight routine. I enjoy the variety of lat pull downs, pushups on a fit ball and chest press etc. It feels good to really target these muscle groups more thoroughly. I remember how much I actually like doing weights, especially when the gym is empty and there's not a hundred beefcake blokes grunting and dropping weights on the floor...
I then do 20 mins on the cross-trainer. This time I set the level higher to level 6 and do the hill program. I try to work hard and sweat alot...the cooldown starts after 16 mins and I curse the machine cos I like to push myself flatout until the end. Cooldown schmooldown. Cooldown's for pussies.
Spend the rest of the day with my sis again but refrain from further photo taking.
Gastronomy:
Meal 1 - glass of lemon water
muesli with milk
Meal 2 - glass of water
apple and nuts
Meal 3 - glass of water
multigrain sandwich with turkey, bit of cranberry sauce, tomato and rocket
Meal 4 - glass of water
long mac with a fair amount of skinny milk
3 strawberries
Meal 5 - glass of water
scrambled eggs with asparagus, carrot and spinach
Meal 6 - glass of water
yoghurt
I realised the other day that fruit has carbohydrates so I have stopped having strawberries with my yoghurt at night...this diet is extreme. Today I bought my sister a gelati and felt very naughty when I licked the sugary dribble off my hand! So decadent! Haha.
Well one more day of exercise for the week tomorrow and then I get Sunday off! It's gonna be weird...

Day 4 - Still not a bore
Well today was Day 4 of the challenge and I'm loving it. Totally in the groove now. Getting more used to eating regularly and enjoying the early morning exercise. I'm treating the gym like my job but unlike most jobs, I get to clock off after an hour's work!
Today I set my alarm for 7am, snoozed till 7.30 then got to the gym just before 8. It was just cardio today, so I ran for 30 mins on the treadmill. It was a bit of hard slog but I talked myself through it. I find it's harder running on a treadmill cos you have all your stats flashing before you and you know exactly how far you have run and how long you have left.
I am trying to get faster again. I got down to 6 minute kms when I did the half-marathon in July, but now I'm back to 7 minute kms. Today I ran 4.8kms in 30 mins. I do interval training and put the speed up more and more as I run, I get a real kick out of trying to beat my own stats each time...I'm a masochist.
After my workout and a bit of pottering at home, I visited my highly pregnant and housebound sister. She graciously let me take some photos of her belly for this blog. I have to admit I get a small amount of pleasure at seeing her belly this big (ok so I'm a sadist too), cos its the only time in my life that I will have a flatter belly than her. Unless I win this comp I guess ;)
Recap of today's menu:
Meal 1 - glass of water with lemon
muesli with milk
Meal 2 - glass of water
small apple and handful of nuts
Meal 3 - long mac with a dash of milk
glass of water
smoked salmon light rye sandwich with low-fat cream cheese, tomato and rocket
Meal 4 - glass of water
protein shake
Meal 5 - glass of water
smoked salmon with rocket and steamed asparagus and carrot
Meal 6 - glass of water
yoghurt
Tomorrow is my second measure up at the gym! I thought they were gonna do the second measurements after a couple of weeks but Larry came up to me today to let me know its tomorrow morning...OMG I feel its highly doubtful that I will have changed shape in 4 days!
Anyway, maybe I will surprise myself. At the very least, I won't have ballooned like my poor sis...whoops, I said I would be kind!

Day 3 - Feeling great!
Amazingly, I worked out twice today and I'm feeling great! I got to the gym at 7.50am and did some weights and then hurried home to wolf down brekky, pack my mid morning snack and lunch and then head off to pick up my sis.
Spent most of the day with her and my Mum and even managed to get a bit sunburnt in the backyard! Today was such beautiful weather for a change, thanks Melbourne for finally coming to the party for Spring.
Anyway, my sister now has her date to be induced if the little ones haven't arrived by then. Should only be one more week to go at the most! I cant wait to see my beautiful little nieces.
At 5pm I had a program review at the gym with... let's call her Sally. Sally, who is a marathon running gym instructor, told me that she has also entered the six pack challenge! This chick doesn't appear to have an ounce of fat on her! I'm in trouble...
Sally has written me a new program for upper and lower body workouts. I will start this on Friday with my upper body...I'm really pumped! The last time I lifted weights like this I was 21 and over a six month period, I ended up lifting more weight than some of the blokes! Bring it on!!!
So what did I eat today?
Meal 1 - glass of water
muesli with milk
Meal 2 - glass of water
small apple and handful of nuts
Meal 3 - long mac with a dash of milk*
glass of water
100g grilled chicken with avocado and rocket in 2 slices wholegrain bread (in other words, a sandwich!)
Meal 4 - protein shake (vomit inducing at first but I got used to it)
Meal 5 - glass of water
100g grilled chicken with steamed asparagus and 1 stick of celery with hummus
Meal 6 - glass of water
yoghurt
* So I asked Sally about coffee and she said go for it! It's performance enhancing of course and is also good when you are feeling lethargic from training. She even recommended the odd sugar free red bull! Woo hoo!
Also asked Sally about whether I should have one free day a week where I can eat anything I want. She thought in terms of this competition, one whole day was a bit much. Better to do one meal instead. So I'm looking forward to Sat night now...hello carbohydrate rich, fat laden food and wine!
In case you are interested in my training plan it will be as follows:
Day 1
Upper body weights and 20 mins cardio
Day 2
30 mins cardio
Day 3
Lower body weights and 20 mins cardio
Day 4
30 mins cardio
Day 5
Upper Body weights and 20 mins cardio
Day 6
60 mins cardio
Day 7
Rest...finally!
Then the next week start with lower body weights and alternate accordingly.
Let's hope this plan works and Sally wasn't pulling a number on me so she will win...nah I'm sure she wouldn't do that!
Off for that yoghurt and some beauty sleep now...over and out.

Day 2 - Are we there yet?
So Day 2 has gone fairly smoothly apart from the fatigue and headaches from no caffeine. I probably could drink coffee, however only black so I'm avoiding it till I'm desperate.
Today was my first couch day since I left my job, so it's been a weird day, full of DVDs, cancelling credit cards and eating. Eating lots again. But today, I have actually felt hungry in the 5 or 10 mins before I'm due to eat. And totally content bellywise until then...although when any one drinks wine or eats cake in these TV shows I'm watching, I'm already jealous! It's gonna be a long 8 weeks.
Here's today's menu, pretty similar to yesterday:
Meal 1 - glass of water with lemon
small bowl muesli with milk
Meal 2 - a small apple and handful of nuts
glass of water
Meal 3 - a small wholemeal pita with 100g steak, sliced tomato and rocket and a dash of low-fat mayo
glass of water
Meal 4 - rice crackers and cheese
glass of water
Meal 5 - 100g grilled chicken breast with steamed asparagus and celery pieces with hummus
glass of water
Meal 6 - low fat yoghurt and strawberries
glass of water
Went to the gym at 8.20am this morning...just couldn't bring myself to do a 7am start. Tomorrow will most likely be an early one as I'm taking my pregnant sis for her last checkup before her babies are due...yep you heard right, plural - babies...only 2 though, she's not the next Octomum.
As I was running on the treadmill, the gym instructor running this godforsaken challenge (let's call him Larry) came up to me and offered me extra help which is good. I will be submitting my training plan to him once a week for review. So at least Larry will keep me on the right track. And tomorrow, they are doing me a new program, so I can alternate my workouts between upper and lower body instead of doing it all on one day. Hurrah!
I feel really lazy today though...walking to the letter box has been my big outing (apart from the gym but that doesn't count anymore). I have a meditation class tonight, so I'm trying to work up the motivation to go...
Oh well, won't bore you any longer. This blog will get more interesting at some point...right?

Day 1 of my Summer Six Pack Challenge
BMI - 24.1
Abs - totally flabby
Well hello out there. Today is the first day of my Summer Six Pack Challenge. I have signed up to this challenge at my local gym, so I thought I may as well blog the trials and tribulations along the way! The prize for the most improved middle is $500!
I have 8 weeks to turn my wobbly midsection (look at that blubber fly!) into a passable belly for Summer. I am under no illusions that by the end I will actually have well defined abdominals or that I will win this competition. In fact, the idea of me having a six-pack is hilarious to me and my friends alike, most of who have pissed themselves laughing when I have told them of my harebrained idea...
But I'm not doing this without any assistance. The gym instructors have been great, giving me lots of tips and a diet plan. The idea is to eat six small meals a day. This is alot harder than it sounds. Today I have constantly been preparing food, stuffing my gob and feeling full...maybe I'm doing something wrong??
To give you an idea of what I've eaten today:
Meal 1 (Breakfast) - glass of water with a squeeze of lemon
1/2 cup of muesli with half a cup of skinny milk
Meal 2 (Morning tea) - an apple and a handful of nuts
glass of water
Meal 3 (Lunch) - can of tuna mixed with a tbsp of low-fat mayo, a diced tomato and a small can of mixed beans
glass of water
Meal 4 (Arvo tea) - 6 rice crackers with a slice of cheese
glass of water
Meal 5 (Dinner) - small eye fillet steak with rocket (with a tsp of olive oil and balsamic dressing) and two pieces of celery with hummus
glass of water
Meal 6 (Dessert) - yoghurt
glass of waterIt's 8pm now and Ive just finished dinner. So don't feel like the yoghurt but I'm gonna have to squeeze it in before bed...aargh!
I think this has been so difficult cos I didn't have breakfast till 9am, so its put me on the backfoot all day long...
Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit easier. I'm gonna eat at 8am, 10am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm and 9pm...I would have thought that eating this much would be easy and enjoyable but I am so glad that I am an unemployed bum right now! I wouldn't have time to work as well with my hectic eating schedule!!
So to eat by 8am, I'm gonna hit the gym at 7am each day...I must be frickin nuts! Oh yeah, forgot to say that I am gonna exercise six days a week, with Sunday being reserved for God and my abs to prolapse...
Wish me luck!
